Herbie Hancock - “Butterfly” - Directstep. Written by Hancock and Bernie Maupin, they first recorded on The Headhunters album “Thrust”. This newer version features an energetic guitar solo by Ray Obiedo. Directstep might be my favorite 3 song album ever.
Herbie Hancock - “I Thought It Was You” - Direct Step Sunlight. At the tail end of the Headhunters era come s this gem in 1978. Note how it evokes the vocal elements of “Rockit”, yet it came out 5 years before. Now this is a killing disco cut.
Herbie Hancock ft. Jonny Lang & Joss Stone - “When Love Comes To Town” - Possibilities. Mmm hmm. Yup.
Lenny Kravitz sits in to play drums with Trombone Shorty on Herbie Hancock’s “Chameleon” at some random bar. Jam bands everywhere explode. Almost as good as Lenny’s previous impromptu NOLA performance.
Herbie Hancock - “You’ve Got It Bad” - The New Standard. Herbie covers Stevie, and all is right in the world. I’ll get back into posting with more frequency next week. Much to share.
