Clifford Brown - “Daahoud”. My Uncle Joe introduced me to jazz as a kid, making me dozens of mixtapes that I devoured. At 86, he’s seen and met just about everyone. On Thanksgiving, we talked for hours about his favorite shows, including the time he had to pick up Thelonious Monk from the airport for a show he was promoting in Buffalo (Monk was late flying into Buffalo, the crowd was restless). He told me about how he used to sell tickets at the high schools to see Count Basie for $.40 ($.50 at the door). Don’t even get him started on the jazz clubs in NYC, or the first time he heard bebop while serving in the military (his friend, trumpeter Clark Terry, explained to him what it was, while stationed in Honolulu - “that’s bebop dummy!”). I posted this song as he brought the CD with him and we talked about our favorite trumpeters. Brownie is definitely on that list.
